DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley will join the effort to prevent a regional blood shortage by donating Wednesday, March 18 at 10 a.m. at the Community Blood Center Dayton Donor Center, 349 S. Main St.

CBC is taking emergency measures to avert a regional blood shortage as the community acts to halt the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.

CBC is urging eligible members of the community to donate blood and asking blood drive sponsors to keep the blood drives they have scheduled. Make an appointment to donate at or call (937) 461-3220.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley is an experienced blood donor and a supporter of Dayton City Hall blood drives. Mayor Whaley helped kick off the "New Year's Resolution Blood Drive" at the Dayton CBC Donor Center on Dec. 27, 2019 by delivering a welcome message to donors and media and donating. With her Wednesday, March 18 donation she will reach her one gallon donation milestone.

Strong donor support Tuesday, March 17, especially from Reid Health in Richmond, helped maintain the blood supply. Reid considered moving the monthly blood drive to a CBC Bloodmobile. Instead it kept the blood drive in Lingle Hall with its full schedule, including platelet and plasma donations. Reid added cautionary measures including a checkpoint at the hospital entrance where visitors are greeted by staff members and asked a series of question about their travel, health, and contact with anyone diagnosed with COVID-19. They go directly to the blood drive and leave. Reid CEO Craig Kinyon donated platelets saying, "Because there's a critical blood shortage and we need the blood. If the people that need the blood aren't helping get the blood, then something is wrong. Some want to say if we err on the side of safety, nothing will happen. Then nothing would happen, we wouldn't have blood, and we'd start cancelling surgeries."

Reid totaled 173 donors with 133 whole blood donations, three double red cell donations and two platelet donations. In other mobile activity Alvetro Orthodontics totaled 56 donors and 43 whole blood donations.

The Dayton CBC Donor Center totaled 166 donors with 141 red cell donations and 26 platelet and plasma. Whole blood donors totaled 395 at all locations.

CBC's hospital inventory is at a seven-day supply with a range of 5-to-13 days across blood types.
