Community Blood Center to House and Hire Employees of the Blood Center (New Orleans)

DAYTON, OH —Community Blood Center (CBC) has extended an offer to employ and find housing for some of the displaced associates of The Blood Center (New Orleans) until the Blood Center is once again fully operational. Both CBC and The Blood Center are independent blood centers and members of America’s Blood Centers (ABC).

“This is one way that we can offer support to the region,” stated CBC Chief Executive Officer Judith E. Woll, M.D. “We can help some of the individuals displaced by the storm get the pieces of their lives back together by giving them a job and helping them find a place to live.”

Yesterday, America’s Blood Centers (ABC) asked member blood centers who were interested in housing and offering employment to The Blood Center employees to contact ABC. CBC has been in communication with ABC offering support. The Blood Center’s main facility for testing and processing is flooded and will be out of service “much longer than a few weeks” according to a communication from ABC. Employees who stayed at The Blood Center through the storm were evacuated to safety by helicopter on Wednesday. ABC has posted information on its web site(www.americasblood.org) asking for all New Orleans blood center employees to contact ABC at 202-654-2915 to help The Blood Center account for its personnel.

CBC at this time has not received a request for blood or blood products, but is ready to respond with blood and blood products if and when a plea for assistance comes. According to the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism, “current blood inventory levels are meeting hospital needs in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.”

Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services, an independent, not-for-profit organization, is registered to ISO 9001:2000. Community Blood Center provides blood products to 25 hospitals in the Miami (Ohio) and Whitewater (Indiana) Valleys.
