FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 14, 2006
DAYTON, OH — (Friday, July 14, 2006) The emergency appeal for donors will remain in effect this weekend and into next week as the area blood supply is still 740 pints low. Yesterday, Community Blood Center (CBC) registered 504 donors and collected 396 usable pints of blood. Area patients used 272 pints, which is considered high usage for a weekday, and included the following:
- 18 A positive pints for a ruptured aneurism
- 6 O negative pints during an open heart surgery.
Over most weekends, patients typically use 150-200 more pints than CBC collects during the same time frame. Therefore, the blood supply will probably be even lower on Monday than it is today. CBC’s Dayton and West Chester locations will be open on Saturday in addition to three community blood drives scheduled in Arcanum, Hagerstown, IN and in Kettering.
Currently, the area’s blood supply is 740 pints or 20% below safe and adequate levels. All blood types are low, with Type O blood, which is the universal donor type, in particularly short supply (424 pints low).
CBC urges healthy donors who have not given blood in the past two months to donate blood at this time. Donors need to bring a photo ID with their full name and their Social Security Number.
Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically. Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org or call 1-800-388-GIVE. Prospective donors with recent tattoos obtained in Kentucky or Ohio can now give blood as long as the tattoo area has healed and the procedure was done in a licensed tattoo parlor.
