Blood Supply Still 850+ Pints Low-Excess Blood Usage Erodes Gains

DAYTON, OH — (Thursday, July 13, 2006) With another weekend approaching, the area blood supply is still 850 pints low leaving in effect an emergency appeal for blood donors.  Yesterday, Community Blood Center (CBC) registered 587 donors and collected 477 usable pints of blood while area patients used 230 pints.  Patient blood usage remains higher than usual with several patients requiring an excess amount of blood including:

  • 22 pints for a heart patient
  • 21 pints for several patients involved in motor vehicle accidents
  • Today, CBC has already sent 12 pints for a patient receiving treatment for a ruptured aneurism

Currently, the area’s blood supply is 878 pints or 24% below safe and adequate levels.  CBC has less than a two day supply of type O blood which is 503 pints low.  CBC must keep at least a three day supply of all blood types in order to meet the regular needs of area patients and be ready to respond to patient needs in the event of a disaster.

CBC is asking healthy donors who have not given blood in the past two months to donate blood at this time.  Donors need to bring a photo ID with their full name and their Social Security Number.

Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health.  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically.  Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org or call 1-800-388-GIVE.  Prospective donors with recent tattoos obtained in Kentucky or Ohio can now give blood as long as the tattoo area has healed and the procedure was done in a licensed tattoo parlor.
