DAYTON, OH (April 21, 2010) — The deadline for the Save Our Supply Scholarship has been extended! Students who register to donate blood at their high school or who actively recruit others to donate can win scholarship funds, provided their application is postmarked by April 26. The Save Our Supply (SOS) scholarship program, sponsored by Community Blood Center (CBC) and Vectren Corporation is available to high school students in CBC’s 15 county service area. Through SOS, high school seniors have the opportunity to support CBC’s blood supply and be awarded one of five $1,000 scholarships. This is the fourth year Vectren and CBC have partnered to offer a high school scholarship program. The goal is to raise awareness among high school age students about the critical need for blood donors and how their participation can positively impact lives in the community.
To be considered, the applicant must:
- Applicant must currently be a high school senior.
- Applicant does not have to be a blood donor, but blood donor applicants, or applicants that recruit volunteer blood donors will be given special consideration.
- Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
- Applicant’s high school must sponsor one blood drive with CBC during the school year (June, 2009 through May, 2010). A list of high blood drives can be found on our website www.givingblood.org
- Applicant must have a cumulative 2.5 grade point average or higher.
- Applicant must submit a letter of recommendation from a blood drive faculty member, teacher, or principal.
- Applicant must include an official copy of the high school transcript including first semester senior grades.
- Applicants must submit their Donor Recruitment Campaign: “As a blood-drive chairperson, your goal is to encourage your student body to donate blood for your annual high school blood drive. You are to create a campaign described in 300 to 500 words, and include at least 3 support materials, one of which could be an educational video that communicates why blood donation is important and what donors should do prior to the blood drive to help ensure a successful donation.”

Applicants should include their essay, letter of recommendation and official high school transcripts with the completed application sending it to Community Blood Center, Attn: Community Education Specialist, c/o Save Our Supply High School Scholarship Program, 349 S. A committee selected by CBC and Vectren Corporation will choose the scholarship winners. Awards will be presented at the Senior Awards Programs at the respective high schools. The SOS program is made possible in part by a donation from Vectren Corporation.
