FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 5, 2010
DAYTON, OH (April 2, 2010) —On Monday, April 5 Kettering resident Lawrence “Larry” Hardy is scheduled to make his 600th blood donation at Community Blood Center, 349 S. Main St. Hardy, a retired aerospace engineer and businessman, began giving blood during the Vietnam War.
“My first donation occurred at Wright Patterson Air Force Base,” said Hardy. “I was later inspired to give again while attending an Easter morning service.”
Hardy regularly donates whole blood. He also donates platelets and plasma through a process called apheresis. During apheresis, a special machine separates blood into components during the actual donation. The red cells are returned to the donor and only the plasma and/or platelets are kept. This allows the donor to give more often and is better for the recipient.
In 1995, CBC recognized Hardy with its highest honor, the “Award of Distinction,” which is given to a dedicated blood donor who has acted to further the cause of volunteer blood donation.
Hardy has donated his time and energy to Community Blood Center’s fundraising efforts. He chaired the committee in 1998 that raised funds for two new donor coaches and major remodeling of the donor rooms at the Springfield and Dayton facilities. CBC presented Hardy with an “Award of Excellence” for those efforts. In 2001, Hardy was elected to Community Blood Center’s Board of Trustees.
This is the first blood donor at CBC to date that has donated 600 blood products.
