DAYTON, OH (April 25, 2008) — Seventy scholarship applications inundated Community Blood Center (CBC) as the deadline approached to select five students who would receive one of five $1,000 scholarships. Students who attended a high school that hosted a blood drive in the 2007/2008 school year were eligible to apply. The scholarships will be presented to the winning students at their high school awards programs. A committee reviewed the applications and chose the following five winners:
- Abigail Schlater – Versailles High School, Versailles (Will be attending Bowling Green State University)
- Steven Cromwell – Versailles High School, Versailles (Will be attending Miami University)
- Brittany Schaefer – Lehman Catholic High School, Sidney (Will be attending University of Notre Dame)
- Cara Schroeder – Lehman Catholic High School, Sidney (Will be attending Ohio Northern University
- Heather Snyder – Union County High School, Liberty, IN (Will be attending Indiana University)
The Save Our Supply (SOS) scholarship program was sponsored by Vectren Corporation and Community Blood Center. This is the second time CBC has offered a high school scholarship program. The goal is to raise awareness among high school age students about the critical need for blood donors. To be considered, the applicants submitted an essay regarding high school blood donor recruitment, a letter of recommendation, and transcripts. Also considered were the students’ grade point averages. The SOS program was made possible in part by a donation from Vectren Corporation. A committee selected by CBC and Vectren chose the scholarship winners. Awards will be presented at the Senior Awards Programs at the respective high schools.
